Project Overview

This catalogue is a collection of over 50 gears, in 8 unique shapes, forms and sizes.
The nature of the gears, and their real-world application in the construction industry,
inspired the design of the catalogue in a Russian Constructivism style through the
implementation of shapes, blocks, and the use of red as a primary and contrast colour.

Ideation Process

Before creating the final design of the catalogue, various concepts, ideas, variations,
design decisions, and refinements were made. There were various changes in the layout grid, imagery style, layout, and colour scheme.

Reflection and Project Takeaways

While completing this project, I learned the importance of consistency and variety in a multi-spread project such as designing books, catalogues, magazines, etc. I learned the importance of creating a consistent grid system, typographic style and colour scheme that makes each page similar to the previous, while the layout creates visual interest and excitement.

A few thing that I learned from this project were:

  • The importance of looking back and ensuring that subsequent spreads were contributing to the visual interest of the catalogue.

  • Ensuring that the design choices are contributing to the overall message that the design is conveying.

  • The importance of frequently looking at the spreads together to ensure that all spreads maintained a visual consistency.

If I were to redo the project, I would likely experiment more with the typography in order to create a higher visual impact on the design. In terms of variety and consistency, moving a few of the pages around might help with unifying the design into an interesting visual composition.
